PBBG’s
Since most of you think I was really done with blogging, shame on you, it was even a post about April fools….. Now on with the show.
I am by no means new to PBBG’s (persistent browser based games), I have played some really bad ones, and some that can really keep my interest. Here is a quick history lesson for those of you new to the interwebz.
Planetarion (2000-2001) - My uncle introduced me to Planetarion when I was a freshman in college. This was a very good early PBBG (complex enough to make it interesting and unique, but easy enough to pick up and play right away) It required you to work together with the 24 other people in your group. Attacks were coordinated to happen at the same time, and it was real time, so if someone attacked your group at 2am, someone had to rally the defenses in the 4-6 hours you had before the attack arrived. I was in a group with a lot of Europeans so I had to set alarms to be up at weird hours to make attacks with them all. I met a lot of cool people, my uncle has kept in touch with some of the old guys. What killed planetarion is they made it pay to play (in order to start each round, rounds lasted ~3 months, you have to shell out like 5 real dollars….) in college that wasn’t what I wanted to do. So that brings me to my second and probably the most fun PBBG I have played.
Utopia (2000-2007) – Mehul Patel made a great game and he still does, he keeps it very fresh and it is like a new game every few rounds. Again like Planetarion, Utopian rounds last around ~3-4 months. In Utopia the game moves ahead one turn every hour. Attacks are instant, so there is no need to set alarms or wake people up if attacks come in, as there is no way to prepare defenses. But you do have to work with the other people in your kingdom to accomplish great things, i was in a top 10 kingdom for a few ages, and i still talk to a few people that i met while playing. the one turn an hour was enough to keep it interesting and always something new, while not feeling like you have to be online 24/7.
Tribal Wars (2007-Present) - last Summer I found this game randomly. i invited a few friends from World of Warcraft and some co-workers. Some how it all took off and we were in a pretty successful tribe. As of right now we own one entire continent and are growing well. This game is in constant motion, there is no turns, everything happens to the second. launching attacks takes different amounts of time based on the distance the troops have to travel. It can be a lot of fun, but recently i have had a lot going on in real life to dedicate the time needed to run the tribe, so i have a co-worker account sitting for me. We are on World 9 in the South East if anyone is interested in joining us.
Dino Parc (2008- Present) - This is a much slower game that is at a pace i can handle with what is going on in my life right now. You can really only make one turn a day, and you have to work together with your clan to win wars fighting other dino’s. It is fun leveling up your dino, and fighting other people dino’s. if you want to join us click the link and join clan WXC dino squad.
Those were the good ones now some bad ones
Kings of Chaos – you have to get people to click a link to gain more troops and gold, and people just have bots that will click their links for them….
Human age – another of the once a day, but with no real rewards or group interactions, i could have more fun with an excel spreadsheet on my desktop.
There are many others i have tried, just more distractions to keep my ADD mind from being bored. Thanks for stopping by, leave a comment, i’ll be back with something new tomorrow.

Jeebus! After reading your post I think, wow! You must have some crazy processing going on in that head of yours! For the several years I’ve known you I can name probably another dozen games that you have played on and off. And every off the wall game that I think is fairly unique, you seem to be experienced at. Crazy stuff!
I don’t know about this waking up at oddball hours for gameplay. You are a strange one Doug!
